Dear ACT Constituents,
You are invited to a career mentoring tele-conference meeting with our national ACT president Ashok Gupta on
4/20/07 from 12pm-1pm EST
Ashok Gupta is currently VP, Alliance Development, supporting Office & Production Groups. He joined Xerox Canada in 1975. He has held a series of information systems, financial, planning, marketing and general management assignments in Toronto, Palo Alto, Rochester, and El Segundo. Attached is his bio.
In this mentoring session, you will have opportunity to ask Ashok Gupta career related questions or simply listen to the answers to other people’s questions. Below is Ashok’s core view of career development:
- You are the owner of your “brand”. You must “market” your brand. Best products don’t necessarily win in the “market place”. “Marketing” is hard work. Your “market” extends beyond the virtual confines of Xerox Corporation.
- Xerox doesn’t “owe” you anything, but opportunities. You have to go and capture them.
- Xerox doesn’t manage your career - you do. Career planning is like a “game” with its own set of rules. These rules can be learned. There are a lot of “unwritten” rules - call them “tribal” knowledge. You are dealing with “people” - people are inherently not rational!
- To some degree career management is also like a “stock market” - rewards tend to correlate with risk (concept called risk adjusted return). You need to know your “risk tolerance”.
- You must have a “plan”. If you don’t know where you are going - you get can’t there! You must have a “goal” in mind.
- “Luck” plays a role that is greater than people generally acknowledge - but you must be ready when lady luck knocks at your door!
- The “buck stops with you”!
Registration is required. Please use this web survey tool to input your email, years of tenure and organization. Dial-in information will follow.
