Xerox exec in line to be first black woman CEO

Xerox Corp. is home to a lot of firsts. It invented the laser printer, the Ethernet data network and the computer mouse. Now it may become the first Fortune 500 company headed by a black woman.

Chief Executive Officer Anne Mulcahy, 54, on April 3 named Ursula Burns, 48, president with the expectation that she would move up when Mulcahy steps down, analysts including J.P. Morgan Securities Inc.’s Bill Shope wrote in notes on the appointment. Burns, who grew up in a housing project in Manhattan, also became the only inside director besides the CEO.

ACT Learning Event: Career Mentoring Conference Meeting with Ashok Gupta on 4/20/07

From Kocz Botao

Dear ACT Constituents,

You are invited to a career mentoring tele-conference meeting with our national ACT president Ashok Gupta on

4/20/07 from 12pm-1pm EST

Ashok Gupta is currently VP, Alliance Development, supporting Office & Production Groups. He joined Xerox Canada in 1975. He has held a series of information systems, financial, planning, marketing and general management assignments in Toronto, Palo Alto, Rochester, and El Segundo. Attached is his bio.

In this mentoring session, you will have opportunity to ask Ashok Gupta career related questions or simply listen to the answers to other people’s questions. Below is Ashok’s core view of career development:

  • You are the owner of your “brand”. You must “market” your brand. Best products don’t necessarily win in the “market place”. “Marketing” is hard work. Your “market” extends beyond the virtual confines of Xerox Corporation.
  • Xerox doesn’t “owe” you anything, but opportunities. You have to go and capture them.
  • Xerox doesn’t manage your career - you do. Career planning is like a “game” with its own set of rules. These rules can be learned. There are a lot of “unwritten” rules - call them “tribal” knowledge. You are dealing with “people” - people are inherently not rational!
  • To some degree career management is also like a “stock market” - rewards tend to correlate with risk (concept called risk adjusted return). You need to know your “risk tolerance”.
  • You must have a “plan”. If you don’t know where you are going - you get can’t there! You must have a “goal” in mind.
  • “Luck” plays a role that is greater than people generally acknowledge - but you must be ready when lady luck knocks at your door!
  • The “buck stops with you”!

Registration is required. Please use this web survey tool to input your email, years of tenure and organization. Dial-in information will follow.

2007 DiversityInc Top 50

From Ernest Hicks

The 2007 DiversityInc Top 50 list was officially published yesterday and Xerox ranked 7th in the Top 10 for overall diversity which is outstanding (Complete list below)! We also achieved rankings in 5 of the 8 subcategories. The subcategories will be publicly announced individually one week at a time over an 8 week timeframe starting March 26th and ending in May. However, I have our subcategory rankings now which are based on the top ten companies in each area, our rankings are below. A total of 317 companies competed in the ranking which is a 100 percent increase over the last three years and a 24 percent increase over last year.

The list is determined entirely by a statistical analysis of responses to 230- survey questions. We were also selected by the Empire State Pride Agenda Foundation to receive the 2007 Equity @ Work Award for outstanding leadership in creating a fair and equal workplace for GBLT employees. Nomination for this recognition was employee driven and we thank the Galaxe leadership and constituency for nominating Xerox and submitting the application.
